Security that assumes someone is already trying
Attackers scan for open doors, and small businesses usually have one. Most breaches at this size are not sophisticated: a stolen password, an invoice that looked real, a laptop nobody patched in a year.
The point of layering is that no single failure turns into a very bad month.
Six layers, and what each one is actually for
Security gets sold by acronym. Here is what each layer does in plain terms.
Your passwords will get stolen. Assume it. Multi-factor authentication and conditional access mean a working password from an unrecognized device in an unexpected country still does not get in. Identity threat detection flags the login that somehow got past both.
Ransomware moves faster than you can call anyone. Endpoint detection watches for behavior, so a machine that suddenly starts encrypting everything gets cut off from the network before it reaches the rest of them.
Phishing is the front door. Email filtering stops most of it. DNS and web filtering handle the one that gets through, by refusing to load the malicious site after somebody clicks.
Your network and cloud talk more than you think. Network detection and cloud posture monitoring look for the pattern that does not fit: traffic to somewhere new, a mailbox rule quietly forwarding to an outside address, an admin role granted at two in the morning.
Credentials leak somewhere else, then get tried on you. Dark web monitoring on your domain tells you when a staff email shows up in somebody else’s breach. That is usually the warning shot before an attempt on you.
Backups are the layer that assumes the rest failed. Tested backups of Microsoft 365 and every endpoint mean the worst case costs you a day.
The technical names, if you want to check this against what you already have: EDR and EPP, ITDR, conditional access, email security, DNS and web filtering, NDR with XDR and SOAR correlation, SSPM and CSPM, and dark web monitoring. All of it sits inside the $129 per user. None of it is quoted separately as a security package.
